It's Been a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, Yuletide

What I received:

Two, count them two stories in No Flying in the House by Betty Brock. This is an example of what I truly love about Yuletide. The stories couldn't be more different and yet I love them both so very much. And since I wrote this up before I posted, I just found out they're by the same author.

Come Flying (2837 words) by Morbane
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: No Flying in the House - Betty Brock
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Beatrice Cox, Annabel Tippens
Additional Tags: Female Friendship, Adventure, Post-Canon, Fae & Fairies
Summary:

Annabel and Beatrice meet again in their twenties. To Beatrice, now, Annabel seems far more worldly-wise - but she is not entirely free of otherworldly ties.

I'm a sucker for people meeting again after they had drifted apart and I love that Annabel is still in touch with her fae heritage even if she gave up being a fairy.

A fairy comes to land (3386 words) by Morbane
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: No Flying in the House - Betty Brock
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Beatrice Cox, Annabel Tippens
Additional Tags: Fae & Fairies, Childhood
Summary:

Beatrice doesn't know what to think when Annabel's parents turn out to be real.

I adore Beatrice in this, trying to make logical sense of something that should only happen in stories.

Morbane, I will love you forever for these wonderful Yuletide fics.

What I wrote:

I wrote two pinch hits along with my assigned fic. All of them were a lot of fun to write.

Henry Reed's Mystery Yarn (4128 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Boxcar Children - Gertrude Chandler Warner, Henry Reed - Keith Robertson
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Benny Alden, Jessie Alden, Violet Alden, Henry Alden, Henry Reed, Margaret "Midge" Glass, Mabel Harris, Alfred Harris, John Carter (Boxcar Children)
Additional Tags: Mystery, Knitting, Diary/Journal, Crossover
Summary:

Henry Reed gets tangled up in a mystery with some new friends.

Henry Reed meets the Boxcar Children. Hijinks ensue. One of my recipient's wants was knitting, so I started with Henry learning how to knit (though that changed during revision) and went from there.

Dear Daria (1562 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Daria (Cartoon), Fangirl - Rainbow Rowell
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Cath Avery, Wren Avery, Daria Morgendorffer, Jane Lane, Reagan (Fangirl)
Additional Tags: Epistolary, Sisters, College, Fashion & Couture, Crossover
Summary:

College means a new beginning for Quinn, and maybe the girl she was in high school is no longer the girl she wants to be.

Wren needed a new roommate after the events of Fangirl, Daria ends with Quinn a little wiser and more mature (say what you will, there were things I liked about the last season and the 2nd movie) and the thing just wrote itself. I did think when I started that I'd get far enough along in the year for Daria to show up, but it wanted to be letters/diary entries.

In the Window (2180 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Boxcar Children - Gertrude Chandler Warner
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Henry Alden, Benny Alden, Jessie Alden, Violet Alden, James Henry Alden
Additional Tags: Judaism, Family, Chanukah, menorah
Summary:

Sometimes miracles do happen, sometimes you do get a second chance.

Both the prompter and I were dissatisfied with the explanation given in the prequel about why the Alden's grandfather didn't like their mother, so I started thinking about why she might have been considered an inappropriate match for what must have been a well-off New England family, going with the time that the earliest of the books were being published. I came up with the recent Jewish immigrant idea first and then it decided it wanted to be a Chanukah story. The song I took the title from is embedded below.

Next up [community profile] purimgifts, for all your strong women, evil Vizier, and general Jewish needs. It's much more laid back and I'm looking forward to it, once I've had a little rest.
