My Dear, Adored Ship Swap Author

With any luck I'll get a letter up Friday afternoon. Until then, ignore this post. ;)

Did I write that a month ago? I am so sorry, dear author. Let me recycle bits from previous dear author letters and see if I can give you something more to go on.

My Dear, Adored Ship Swap Author,

Welcome to my journal. Glad you've come. Have a chair, sit down, enjoy the scenery. I've tried not to be too difficult in my requests, but it's hard to tell sometimes.

I'm very easy to write for, I promise. I like canon (especially the weird obscure bits), snark and witty banter (as you might be able to tell from my choice of characters), capers and proper adventures, characterization pieces, crossovers. I'd rather not have anything above PG-13. I'm not really in this for the smut and I'd prefer that all of the characters stayed alive. As you may guess by my choice of fandoms and characters, I am fond of cheesy plots, snark and witty banter (see above) and couples having amazing adventures together. Feel free to take advantage of this.

Beta-readers are your friends - please do check for grammar, spelling and scientific accuracy (as far as you can). Historical accuracy too - if you're doing historical Doctor Who, or Johnson Johnson or Trixie Belden contemporaneous to the series, please don't assume they had access to the same technology we do now. On the other hand, both Johnson Johnson and Trixie Belden were contemporary to the time they were written, even when that meant discrepancies between books, so feel free to bring them up-to-date.

Doctor Who (1963)
Sarah Jane Smith/Vislor Turlough

What you do with the two of them is up to you. There are so many possibilities given that they only met for 5 minutes on screen.

I suspect that given their pasts, a relationship would be somewhat disfunctional. She's got abandonment issues and trust issues, he's very vocal about hating Earth and he also has trust issues. On the other hand, she wouldn't have to keep secrets from him.

I can think of so many scenarios for this - one or both of them while they're travelling with the Doctor, Turlough coming back to Earth post-series, Sarah Jane visiting the Brigadier at St. Brendan's. Have fun with this one.

Feel free to bring in extended canon here. I'm open to any Doctors/other companions appearing in the story and a story set in any era. Just go ahead and have fun with them meeting/teaming up/distrusting each other/etc.

Johnson Johnson Series - Dorothy Dunnett
Joanna Emerson/Johnson Johnson

Dolly and the Nanny Bird remains my favourite JJ book to this day (though Send a Fax to the Kasbah and Dolly and the Cookie Bird are close behind) and I still ship it. A caper with both of them being awesome would be my ideal for this fandom.

I don't know what else to say here, except that, if you don't know the fandom, the books are available for the Kindle and they're funny spy/adventure romps.

Trixie Belden Mysteries - Julie Campbell Tatham & Kathryn Kenny

You've got options here. Pick one of the three couples or write about all three.

Dan Mangan/Honey Wheeler

I'd like to see Honey's parents' reaction to her not choosing the perfect boy/not being the perfect girl. I think Dan would throw her out of her comfort zone the way Trixie does and I really think Honey needs more of that.

Madeleine Wheeler/Matthew Wheeler

Somewhere along the line I started making up a mysterious past for Madeleine Wheeler. We always hear that she's going to disapprove of people/things, and yet on the rare occasions when she is present in the books she's mostly supportive and helpful (end of the Red Trailer Mystery, The Mysterious Code). How did she end up with someone like Matthew Wheeler? What sort of relationship do they have?

This is the only couple on the list where I wouldn't mind a break-up story. However, as might be obvious from the previous paragraph, I like Madeleine Wheeler, and I feel like she was too often used by the authors of the series as the designated character to bash to show how wonderful Trixie's parents are, so if you do write a break-up, please try to avoid that particular trope.

Bill Regan/Joan Stinson

The Mystery at Saratoga ends with the implication that they'll be seeing each other again and yet we never get to see that. All I really want to know here is what happened next.

Secret Country Series - Pamela Dean
Ruth Carroll/Randolph (Secret Country)

I've been waiting a very long time to read what happens next with these two. She's still very young and they both have a lot to figure out. Do her parents come to the wedding? How do they adjust to being a couple, and to her not being one of the princesses? What other adjustments do they have to make (literally being from different worlds)?
